Comparative Approaches to Research Assessment

Monday 16 June 2008

The assessment of research takes numbers of forms, and can apply to individual projects (before or after), to outputs (for publication or exploitation), or to groups of activity (departments or institutions). A number of countries operate national research assessment mechanisms that are used to inform their funding mechanisms. They are all in various stages of development and evolution, and are significantly influenced by political interests and drivers.

This workshop will explore the alternative approaches, the policy drivers that are being used, and the effects they have on individual and institutional behaviours. The systems of Australia, New Zealand, and the UK will be discussed in more detail, including some of the changes being introduced, and an opportunity to discuss the approaches an institution might take.

Presenters

Dr Ian Carter (Chair), Director of Research, University of Liverpool, UK
Prof. Ian McNay, Professor Emeritus, Higher Education and Management, University of Greenwich, UK
