Congress Programme

The INORMS Congress takes place over five days, including the main two-day Conference and three days of pre- and post-conference seminars and workshops. A summary programme for the whole five days can be found further down this page.

Weekend Saturday 14 - Sunday 15 June

We expect that some of our international visitors will want to arrive over the weekend to visit Liverpool and adjust to UK time. There will be no formal programme until late on Sunday afternoon, but we offer early arrivals advice about places to visit in Liverpool and its environs over the weekend and after the Congress.

On Sunday afternoon, we will offer an Orientation Session for international delegates to find out something about UK research systems and some of the language (and jargon!) you are likely to encounter over the following days.

Delegates arriving on Sunday evening will be able to contact each other on or prior to arrival, and we will recommend restaurants for groups to make their own dining arrangements.

Delegates from universities which are members of the Internaitonal Network of Universities will be invited to attend a meeting of the INU Special Interest Group for Research Managers.

Monday 16 June

A range of pre-conference events will take place on Monday. These will include our established course for newcomers to research administration, 'Fundamentals of Research Administration', in both a UK-specific version and an international version targeted at new and emerging research organisations, predominantly in less-developed countries, led by presenters from several INORMS member societies. Where possible some sessions will be shared between the two courses.

We will offer a half-day seminar entitled Research Assessment: a Comparison of Global Practices, and an 'Executive Forum' discussion meeting aimed at Directors/Heads of Research Offices of university or other public sector organisations. The Executive Forum will discuss two topics: the complementary roles of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and the Director of Research Support/Services, and KPIs for those involved in research support.

Many UK delegates are expected to arrive during Monday, and the day will conclude with ARMA's traditional reception for newcomers to our conference. Dinner groups will be organised so that delegates can sign up before the conference to join a group of delegates for dinner, and get to know other conference attendees in relaxed surroundings.

We are delighted to incorporate a poster exhibition and competition as part of the Congress, enabling participants to share examples of interesting and innovative activities they have undertaken. Delegates are invited to submit an abstract for inclusion in the programme. The poster exhibition will open on Monday evening, and delegates exhibiting posters will be invited to join the newcomers' reception, which provides an opportunity to discuss posters with other participants.

Tuesday 17 - Wednesday 18 June

The main conference will start at 09:15 with the opening plenary session, and will continue via three sets of parallel working sessions (of 75 or 90 minutes) through to 17:30. The ARMA AGM takes place during the lunch period.

The Conference Dinner will provide the focal point of the social programme for the congress, bringing all delegates together for an evening. The evening will include a drinks reception and dinner with the traditional ARMA at-table quiz, and musical entertainment and dancing. Naturally some delegates will continue networking into the small hours in the bars of the conference hotels.

Conference resumes at 09:15 on Wednesday, and the second day again includes three sets of parallel working sessions, together with the keynote address. The conference will end at 17:00.

Thursday 19 June

We would like to offer a focused post-conference workshop enabling a smaller group of UK and international participants to consider an aspect of research integrity and ethics in an international context in more depth.

The Congress will conclude at around 16:30 on Thursday.

Member rates apply to members of ARMA and of any other INORMS member society.

The higher rate for non-members will include annual membership of ARMA for the period until 31st March 2009. For tax reasons, ARMA events are open to members only. We have reserved blocks of rooms in a number of local hotels, and delegates must make hotel bookings directly with the hotels: ARMA cannot handle any hotel bookings (except in the case of certain speakers). Whilst we may be able to accept late bookings for the conference, ARMA can take no responsiblity for the availability, or otherwise, of hotels for those booking late.

Please refer to our list of hotels and their contact details to book your accommodation.

General information

Please note that dinner is only included for the Conference Dinner at Aintree Racecourse on Tuesday 17th June. On other nights, participants may choose to eat in their hotel restaurant, or may wish to go to one of the many nearby restaurants. Delegates who would like to meet up with other members for dinner (either in or outside their hotel) should add their name to the daily lists at the registration desk.

We know that first time delegates may be uncertain about the dress code for the Conference. We'd like you to feel comfortable while you're in the sessions, so we'd encourage you to wear 'smart casual' or 'business casual'. But we know some people feel more comfortable in something smarter - so please make your own choice about whether to bring a suit. People do generally prefer to dress up for the conference dinner, however.
