Tips
We recommend using PowerPoint to prepare your poster. Start a New Presentation and set size as A0 (84 cm wide and 118 cm high) and orientation as Portrait (from File - Page Setup). Use clear fonts (a sans-serif font such as Arial is recommended) in a large size (for example, main titles/headings 66-90 pt; authors/subheadings 54 pt; general text: no smaller than 36 pt). Select the background by using Fill Effects, select a suitable colour to match your logo, etc. and choose shading.
Be artistic - present your project in text boxes, add photographs, graphs and a photo of yourself or your team!
- Use "autoshapes" for title box at the top of the page. This should contain the title and your logo in the right hand corner
- The next box should bear the name of the author(s), with a small photo on the right hand side if you wish
- Then create a very large text box in a pale colour with rounded edges to match the title boxes above and work within this.
- Insert text boxes within large box and add text, pictures, graphs, etc. Text can be imported from Word, spreadsheets from Excel - simply cut and paste. Insert pictures from file by right click/select.
We have made an example poster following these tips, so that you can see how they work.
- When working on your poster set the size at 12% so that you can see it properly
- Use Draw to add shapes/text boxes
- To line up text boxes: Control - Draw - align left or right or use Distribute
- To insert bullet points: Insert - Symbols
- Often less is more with posters - avoid using too much text
