Liverpool

2007 was Liverpool's 800th birthday, marking 800 years since King John signed the city's charter. Since then, Liverpool has evolved from a tiny fishing port to second city of the British Empire. The city's maritime legacy was responsible for bringing people to Liverpool from all over the world. The earliest trade links were between Liverpool and Indo-China, and the Liverpool's Chinatown is the oldest in Europe. As well as its two famous cathedrals, the city's architectural landmarks include the famous Liver Building, situated close to the Congress venue.

Liverpool's historic maritime and commercial districts form a World Heritage site, being 'the supreme example of a commercial port at a time of Britain's greatest global influence'. The area's historic significance centres on its involvement in the growth of world trade, mercantile culture, the trans-atlantic slave trade and mass European emigration. The World Heritage Site stretches along the waterfront from Albert Dock, through the Pier Head and up to Stanley Dock, and up through the historic commercial districts and the RopeWalks area to the cultural quarter which is dominated by the magnificent St George's Hall.

More information about Liverpool's historic sites can be found in our downloadable sightseeing brochure.

Liverpool is European Capital of Culture 2008, and throughout the year there will be a wide range of events going on in the city, celebrating its maritime, architectural, literary and musical heritage.

Liverpool's sporting and musical heritage are well known, and delegates may wish to extend their stay in the city to visit famous venues. Further afield, the lakes and mountains of North Wales, the Cumbrian Lake District and the Peak District are well worth a visit by delegates new to this area of Britain.
