Liverpool: European Capital of Culture 2008

Liverpool is European Capital of Culture 2008, and throughout the year there is a wide range of events going on in the city, celebrating its maritime, architectural, literary and musical heritage.

The European City of Culture was started in 1985, when Athens became the first of this hugely successful annual succession of cities. In 1999 the title was renamed European Capital of Culture, and in 2003 the honour was awarded to Liverpool for the year 2008. Previous designated cities include Paris, Lisbon, Madrid, Florence and Prague.

The programme of events presented by Liverpool's cultural and community organisations features concerts, commissions, exhibitions, festivals and premieres across all cultural genres from public arts, architecture, dance, fashion and film to literature, music, science, theatre and visual art. Many events are free.
